I didn't thoroughly degrease my hides before tanning, so I went through and redid the entire process. Now that they are ready to start breaking the edges are hard and shatter like glass. The skin just cracks off into pieces on the thinner parts.

Is this a result of tanning it twice, or did something else happen? I just want to make sure I don't get this result on the next ones.

Tanning has nothing to do with it.
You skins not being degreased properly is the culprit.
No tanning agents can cut through grease or improper set up.
In my early yrs of learning to tan I’ve seen this happen as it’s called grease burn and happens a lot to bear skins that weren’t degreased correctly or enough as it may take 3 degreasing before you get all that junk out.
Chalk it up to being inexperienced as you’ll get there. It’s a learning process and we all go through it when trying to learn by yourself.

These were definitely completely degreased. I did it multiple times until the water was clean.

Could it be burned from the first time of not degreasing?

FWIW the first couple I did with Curatan came out great and I only used a little bit of dish soap to degrease. Not sure why super solvent is doing a lesser job. Maybe I'll just go back to Dawn.

I know everyone says follow the directions exactly, but that didn't work. Is it ok to wash/degrease the snot out of it 3 or 4 times until it's clean as long as it goes back in the pickle?

Well first off you stated they weren’t degreased the first time and if the cape got totally dried out , yes the grease probably set in and it’s extremely difficult to get out afterwards.
Throw that dawn away as it doesn’t have the properties to degrease like super solve. Try using a warm bath 104* tops with salt in the water to aid in degreasing. It opens up the pores to let grease out.
Every skin that gets degreased is different from the next. You can’t go by saying it worked on this one but I did the same on that one. As I stated it can take up to multiple degreasing and having clean waters mean nothing if it’s in cool water as the grease isn’t getting released but just sitting in the skin.
Now washing the snoth means only clean fur not degreased!
Directions are made purposely so the outcome is correct, when it doesn’t come out correct, then always look at your steps cause somewhere on the way we’ve done it means I messed up. Yours was not properly degreased.
The tan works fine as it did it’s job, it’s only fails when the skin isn’t prep properly. It’s a fallacy so many think that it’s the tan when in reality it’s the steps we took that made it mess up. Or a rub on tan can fail ( if one is using it) by not mixing them up properly. Getting a good stable rub on tans never fail.

Dawn may not be as good as super solvent but would it be ok to use it in conjunction with it? Super solvent would be very expensive for what I'm doing if I had to run multiple baths per hide. Could I do 3-4 washes with dawn then a final one with super solvent?

I'm not doubting you that each hide is different, it just seems odd that I did several with Dawn that came out amazing and then all the ones I did with super solvent didn't get degreased.

You keep mentioning following the directions but I did. They say to do one degreasing bath and don't mention doing it again. It may not have been done "right" but it was done according to the directions.

One thing that was differently is I used a wire wheel which seemed to have somewhat shaved it too. There was a ton of tiny pieces of rawhide/skin all over it as it was quite messy. I was thinking maybe all these turned into a sort of hide glue? When I felt the hair it literally felt like super sticky paste, not grease. Thoughts on that possibility?

This is why I only shop-tanned deer capes and let the tannery do the hard stuff. Way cheaper in the long run.x

I have nothing vested in these heights other than a ton of time and elbow grease. Anything that has a lot of meaning to me gets professionally done.

I do want to get very proficient in Home tanning because I love pelts, but sending each one off would cost an absolute fortune. Plus I’d like to get into garment making as a hobby.

How many times have I said more than one maybe needed. As a general rule yes one will suffice
I’m explaining this to you as this is how tanneries who know their crap do it.

    I’m done!!!

Haaahahaha ok get angry about it!! How many times are you also going to say it in the same breath as “you didn’t follow the directions” despite the directions only saying to do it once

All the directions I have seen just say to degrease. It doesn't say just once or 15 times. Just says you need to degrease. Just because it only mentions it one time in the directions doesn't mean you don't have to do it one time. He has been trying to help you bud.

I know he has, and I was appreciative up until the temper tantrum.

My directions said “Degrease by soaking for 30 minutes in super solvent and warm water and then return to pickle.”

In multiple threads this guy has told me to “Stop thinking and just follow the directions exactly” and then tells me I should have done extra things not mentioned. So excuse me if I wanted clarification to make sure I knew exactly which way was correct.

You seem to have a fascination with Dawn. If you believe it worked for you before and Super Solvent did not, then throw away the Super Solvent and go back to Dawn. Why not go back to using Curatan? It was working for you before. Stick to what works for you and problem solved.

The issue here is he can’t admit he screwed up. We’re not having the problem you’re having and it’s not a tantrum trying to get you to realize your the problem and can’t listen. Your head is so far up your butt think you followed directions to the T ! Well if you did l guess what your skin wouldn’t be cracking.
when you learn that you messed up you might find out the help was the best advice. Shame your so pigheaded that’s why I’m done! Lol just one more rant .

    O
Ok Boomer. Guess it’s hard to admit you contradicted yourself. Who’s pigheaded? I’ve told you I followed the directions yet you’re still saying I didn’t. We’re you standing over my shoulder?

Clearly I messed up. Mostly by listening to you. Before I listened to your advice to “do them all over” I may have had sticky hair but they were soft and were able to be broken in lmao!!

In all serious I have no issue admitting when I did something wrong. But I’m not going to sit here and say I did when I didn’t. I followed the directions MINUS shaving, you mouth breather. Idgaf if you believe me or not. As I already said the hair felt like it was sticky from some type of breakdown from the powdery hide fibers that got mixed in, or something else, but not greasy. Guess I should have just combed it out and ignored your advice to do it again and my hides would be fine lololol

Because I want washable garment quality hides.

I’m not fascinated with dawn. Just saying it’s a little odd that a round of regular soap was sufficient to degrease multiple other hides great but super solvent applied as per the directions didn’t do it.

I don’t think the issue was the hides not being degreased. The sticky mess on the hair felt like super glue or rendered keratin. Something other than oil or grease.

But you didn't follow directions and degrease before tanning the first time. There isn't any damn "do overs" You ruined them and go back to square one? Why not try a second, third and fourth time? Because, like Frank said, it's not going to work then either...

“you didn’t follow the directions”...Print that phrase out and staple it to your forehead for next time...
