Still Tacky...

Well, following 8ptd's post about blistering paint I've picked up some bad juju.

I have a self cast head (320), molded in simple alginate, no release agent, and have two spots about the half the size of a pea where my gloss has stayed tacky.

I found out when the gummy material stuck to my finger while swapping the fish from a paint stand to a display. It's pulled the paint a bit at these locations but nothing I'd redo if I could just get everything solid.

This skin mount fish is basically painted and has no issues with soft or tacky paint elsewhere. It has quite a few sealer coats of spray can lacquer over acrylic paint.

I don't remember the paint ever being tacky before, but could easily have missed these two spots as I try not to have hands all over my work. The one spot definitely had hand painting applied and the application seemed as usual during that process.

Soooo?

Diagnosis and/or suggested course of action appreciated.

Spray Max 2k Urethane gloss will be the final clear coat...is there a chance laying that over top cures and I'm not in for more intrusive work?

So here's how it all played out. Maybe this helps someone, IDK.

Mineral Spirits did the trick of getting rid of the gummy spots. But, when I re-glossed, they were back.

So, I applied mineral spirits again. And went over the spots with a slow set architectural clear epoxy I have. It did the trick.

I was surprised at how liberally I could apply the mineral spirits without significant damage to the paint. I do seal often though, so maybe that's why.

Thanks Clew for sharing your knowledge with me. Ultimately, it saved my butt on this project. We all run into some new problem eventually, I truly am grateful for your help. The forum is in many repspects a mess, but I always admire those who stick around and help others just because they are generous.
