I had someone bring me a short haired doe to mount. I was wondering what is the recommended way to cape her out? Should I try to cape her just through the mouth with no cuts? Or should I plan a small relief cut on the back of the head/neck?

When it comes to mounting her, her neck is so small & her head is rather large. I'm guessing I'll have to cut the head off the form and insert through the mouth, then reattach? If so, do you clay through the eye holes? Mouth? Any tips would be appreciated. I've mounted plenty of bucks, but oddly, my first doe...and a short hair.

You pretty much answered your own questions. I usually go with a relief cut between ears, makes it easier to get ear butts right and getting cape on. I can sew up a seam pretty good so not worried about it being seen. I cape out without making cuts, just roll off from neck over face, green skin stretches.

Thanks Paul. With that relief cut, are you able to mount the deer without cutting the head off the form on these skinny necked early doe? Thanks

I do mine pretty much like a buck. Just not antlers....i make a cut between the ears just big enough to get ears cut and leavesee enough room to build ear butt's. I tried doing one with no relief cut and it was a pain to try to get skin over the head because of the ears...but I'm sure it's possible

  7. I've mounted several does and I've tubed them off thinking I would do it without a relief cut. On all of them I decided to cut once I was mounting. I feel it's just too hard to do good eyes, ears, etc without it. Thin skin so sewing is usually easy.

I tube all of mine. I built a hide stretcher out of a bottle jack and 1" square tubing. The whole rig cost about $45 and it makes life way easier not sewing and not messing up the clay on all your mounts. It is a pain to get the ear butts right but after a few, you'll get the hang of it.

nice idea on the hide stretcher thing!
i tried to tube, failed, so just cut as if it were a stag, right up to the back of the ears basically.... had trouble getting it over the form, so made some 'relief' cut further along lol.

im backyard as all hell, so no stress for me... the hind had summer coat an not much of a mullet either to hide stitching. but im happy with it :)

would like to do the tube method for fallow deer in future tho- Following
