I am new to taxidermy and have only used DP and Borax but I want to try a simple tan to start. Is tanning hides with Krowtann easy to mess up? Or if I just carefully follow the directions I should get a pretty good finished product? I am willing to take the time to do it right, but I just want to know if it is manageable, since I have never used it. Thanks for the help!

There are so many good tans out there! Pick whatever you want to try and like you stated you need to follow directions to the T . When crap happens it’s because the person using a product does something else.
Now as for krowtan I’m not saying ya or nay for their are personal reasons I won’t use it. I tan like a professional tannery tans with proper steps to tanning. I’m not saying it doesn’t work as many well known taxidermist use it and have successfully mounted their hides using it. So read sand follow directions and you’ll be fine.

Agreed, very simple as long as you follow the directions and have had great results, even on a couple questionable capes.

Just realize, tanning is as much a physical process as a chemical one.

You can't make bread by just throwing flour, yeast and water in a bowl and expect it to form a dough. You have to work it.
