Shipping Damage

That is a problem with those shippers. Their employees are under pressure to move the boxes as quickly as possible so they don't take any care in handling them gently even if you have it listed as fragile. The problem is, what choice do we really have?

 

Thats why i dont ship any mounts in cardboard.
All my crates are atleast 2x2 frames and atleast 1/4 wood.
I sleep a lot better at night doing it this way. LOL
I ship alot of whitetail mounts across the country that hunters are paying high dollar amounts to shoot at local ranches. And when clients are paying $10,000-$20,000 and up for these bucks, there is no way I am shipping in cardboard.
Also, client pays for the crate material and time to build it.

 

used to build crates and frames and secure mounts in... your problem is securing mount to box without any “cushion”.... now I wrap mounts loosly is plastic and let them float in peanuts... no damage in 10 plus years this way...this method was in archives somewhere by a guy from oregon or washington?

 

I would rather take my chances with an "8 foot drop" in a wooden crate verses a cardboard box.
Knock on wood but in 20 years of shipping wooden crates, I have never had any damages. I work with a good shipping broker and truck lines I guess. The majority of deer heads I ship are shipped FedEx ground in wooden crates. Larger crates go by freight.

 

I use heavy cardboard boxes, and place a sheet of lauan plywood on one side, on the OUTSIDE of the box. Dry wall screws with flat washers go through the lauan, and into the base of the mount, which holds it securely in place. I have not had a mount damaged...yet!

 

Just letting you guys know that ship crates , if you go to a Fastenal company , they are all over . They will ship to any of their stores , so store to store , you drop off your client picks up at store for 1/3 the price of anyone else . I had a crated base that 45x36x 40 tall , weight was 85 lbs from Illinois to Delaware for $145 . You can’t beat that .

I started using a Wild game transport company. No crating, they pickup at my shop, load into a trailer and fasten in place. They assume all responsibility. Cost seems to be comparable to freight costs. No problems in the last 4 years and clients seem to be happy.

 

Shipped a new Mini Flesher out a couple weeks ago in a brand new box, here is what arrived when the customer received it. UPS has been investigating for 3 weeks now.

WTH!!!! Wow!

 

I order a reproduction northern pike from McKenzie. when it arrived to tail was broken off. Shipped back the next one came through a different shipper, arriver whole but the box still busted up. So far the only shipper that has not damaged the boxes is Speedee.

 

In order to cut costs all shipping companies are hiring new employees to handle packages. Also to comply with new federal equal opportunity guidelines.
