Can You Dry Preserve A Deer Hide With Borax Only?

I’ll say this to answer your question YES
But unless you have the proper knowledge on thinning and the right hide paste it’s going to end up bad

 

I've tried every way you could think of through the years. About 25yrs ago I mounted a few for myself with straight borax and they have held up just as well as some I mounted with bessmaid. Will it help using stop rot first, im sure it will. Like Frank said use the right glue!! Oh and don't put your hands on it for a few weeks.

 

Why would you use borax only? DP isn't that expensive. I like the drying attributes of DP vs borax. DP is about 80% talc, which serves as a dessicant. If you use borax only, your specimen should probably be in a climate controlled area, since it will dry much slower. To answer your question, it will work, but I like the drying and preservation characteristics of DP. If you use it in conjunction with Stop Rot, which I have my own reservations about, you certainly are not saving any money. BTW, I use Second-2-Nature DP. A 65 lb box will treat 150 deer capes.

 

I prefer DP over borax. Even on turkeys, I use borax over the whole skin and the go back and rub Dp into the feather tracks. Dp is like borax on steroids.

 

Going to go thru all that , just tan it . It’s not that difficult

 

I do not use Stop Rot. I had been mounting deer for 30 years before Stop Rot was invented.
