This is the 2nd shoulder mount I've done, my first mule deer. The red on the nose pad really stands out in the picture but isn't as noticable in real life. Let me know what you think, what I can fix, and what I can improve on!
    Thanks,
    Red

I haven't done any mulies yet, so my opinion is just that an opinion. The ear butts look like they are a little too low. Like they need to be pushed up and forward a little. Also, it looks like you may have cut your skull plate wrong. It seems the forhead is a little lower than it should be and the antler tilt is off because of it. You also mentioned the red on the nose being more noticible in the picture than it really is, but the colors should blend from one to another, not just red and black. Like I said, thats just my opinion since I haven't done a mule deer. There's a lot of people who can shed more light on this than me.

Also, it looks like the nostrils are opened up a little to much

NOT BAD FOR YOUR SECOND MOUNT. MY BEST ADVISE IS STUDY LIVE REFERENCE AND PICTURES. THE BRISKET SEEMS VERY BIG? EYE SHAPE, EAR SHAPE AND GROOMING TO ADD TO LIST ABOVE.
DID YOU USE DRY PRESERVE TO MOUNT THIS DEER? MOUNT HAS THAT DP LOOK ABOUT IT.
    HANG IN THERE!!!

Thanks for all the info, I will take all that into consideration on my next mount. It's not a dry perserve, I bought a tanned hide from AAA Animal Exchange because this deer was taken a few years ago and the cape wasn't kept. I used a mannikin with preset eyes and earliners with ear butts. I used a steel brush with real fine teeth to comb him out, is the better way of grooming that would give it a better look?

    Thanks again!

I always use a "pet slicker" brush on mine, but hey, I just happened to have it laying around !

While its in drying stage. groom and work your detail in. I will use several different size brushes. tooth brush works great to grooming ears and around eyes. back brush hair to so it lifts it up to give mount that soft look.

The biggest thing is your antler set and like said above lose the red if you want that flesshy look start out with flesh when painting the nose pad hit all the little pods that need to be blended on that one and the over spray will cover it up then back off and mist the pad to your liking. What I mean by blending the nods is do aounr the nose in areas let dry then go back and do the other ones you didn't on the first go around . once dry take a light brush and go over the nose to fill in and tie in the gaps.
