How do you all preserve the last little wing bones (metacarpal?)? Not too much seems to be addressed on this. Turkeys, geese ,I guess bigger birds I will see flesh removed from under the wing with a small incision. But smaller ,pheasants or ducks or even smaller like quail for instance, is there enough flesh to worry about? Inject maybe? Is there a "rule of thumb", say, " bigger than a pheasant? Or certain types of birds? Waterfowl vs upland? Any responses should be helpful. Thanks

From large ducks on up, I make a cut on underside and remove meat and often use superglue to close it up. Most upland I don't worry about it. Turkeys I for sure remove as I stated.

The first decent ducks I mounted 50 years ago all lost their primaries due to dermestids. No matter how small the bird, I slice down between the bones with a scalpel and remove any flesh, then rub in DP. My preservative of choice for birds is Larry Bloomquists' "PRES" sold by McKenzie. I do not close the incision on commercial birds. I think the open incision aids in rapid and continual drying of the wing tips.
