  1. Here's a deer I did for practice. Its my 6th mount and the first one I did in my new shop I made in my basement. Please let me know what you think.

The deer looks good but your ear butts are about twice as long as they should be. Shorten the ear butts. For your 6th, it's really pretty good.

  4. Thanks George, I know the ear butts are long. I have the ear canal up against the form and could not get them any shorter. My friend told me to dig the form out a little next time and that should shorten the butts up. If you have any more suggestions I would appreciate it.

You may THINK you have the ear canals against the manikin, but I assure you, you don't. The ear canal from the external ear opening into the skull cavity is less than two inches. Most earliners with butts have just about this much clearance and if your plastic ear butt isn't able to be nailed directly to the manikin, they you have too much clay in them. The outside measurement considered by QDMA for judging quality deer is that the antlers stick outside the ear tips. The "standard" ear tip to ear tip measurement on the "average" deer is only 14 inches. I'd bet your ears are 16 inches or more from tip to tip.

That is some real good advice George. I think many people reading this will get alot better looking ears as a result. Also the mount looks real good for your sixth good job.

George is right, thats the first thing I noticed when I saw the pic. Everything else looks nice and clean though. Keep up the good work.
