I would say for a 60% savings it was worth the chance. Thanks for the tip Ron.

I agree Todd to an extent If it's something that can be replaced I'd do it in a heart beat. But if it's something that is a rare specimen I'd pay the extra

I would agree with that as well but if it were rare I would probably go the extra mile and skin it and salt it just to be on the safe side. Even though salted birds skins can be a pain.

  6. Those squirrels are really rare in Illinois. :D

RDA, how big of box did you ship and how much did it weight ? I ship probably close to 30-50 packages a day with FedEx and find it hard to believe that price altho I am set-up on a discount. Let me know the weight and where you shipped it to so I can compare the price ?

UPS and Fed X transition medium to large containers that do not weigh much from based on weight to based on "cubes". The USPS does not yet do that, but they have size limits where the cost makes geometric increases and they have a maximum limit. The last three USPS second day things (it used to be overnight) I sent were received in three to five days. Priority mail can be just as fast and is cheaper. While USPS does guarantee the shipment to arrive on time and you can get your money back, it does little for spoiled specimens and the paperwork is a pain. Out of five USPS shipments mailed to me, two arrived on time and three did not - the three that did not were USPS mailer envelops at $16.50 a pop. I hope those who mailed them are getting their money back. It is a real crap shoot anymore. In case you did not notice it, UPS has added a fuel surcharge and a delivery area surcharge over and above their shipping costs. I wonder where they ship to for just the basic cost?? I think I am going to use freight companies in the future - I got two pallets of mounts to Hawaii, picked up at my shop and delivered in 7 days.

Beware of the UPS online calculator ... It does not add in fuel surcharge!

I recently measured and weighed a large package and used the online calculator to give my customer a shipping price. I was not happy when I took the box to the UPS store and the price was $30 higher. I had to cover that myself!

So I now call the UPS store with the weight and dimensions, and they can look it up on THEIR special computer and give you the real price.

Next day air from the post office does not mean what you think. 5 days later..... spoiled speciman, and po would not cover, although insured. I don't think any carriers are consistent!!

  13. Everything I have sent with the US Postal service with 2nd day has arrived in more like 4 or 5 days.

Amy, you can do UPS right at home on your computer, start a small business account, it's free, and you get a small break, and UPS supplies all the basic shipping materials and labels you need for free.

I received two frozen Rio Grande turkeys from Texas, in 22 hours. The words "Frozen Food- Perishable" was written on the box. My post office was calling me begging me to come and pick it up before it thawed.
