What if its a bear or mountain lion . I think in that case a gun would work better.

  3. Actually i had a cousin's friend who got attacked by a bear...he stood up to it and socked it right across the snout and it squealed and ran off....i have been "playfully" attacked by a cougar ( my freinds cat i used to care for) I lightly smacked it across the nose and said loudly "No Bite!"...and she stopped...(it was trained).
In general terms if you confront an animal and show no fear and act angry....alot of times they back off and run. Alot of people get scared and panic and run which is the worst thing to do...
9 times out of 10 a bear's charge is usually a bluff...unless it is a Mama with cubs...then you'd better find a tree or something close by like a stick or large branch to knock it with.

Give it to my kids to play with, nothing lasts longer than 10 minutes with them before its destroyed.

Excellent comments guys, I am sorry if I offended anyone but Guns are not as humane as you think. Not every animal should be killed, but every animal has to die. Humans are by far the most deadly animal on the planet. Yes Andy, cars do kill more people that guns do but cars dont mean to kill they just were made that way.

I like this topic. I never have figured out why so many people shoot k-9's. I've used catch poles to hold coyotes and typically give k-9"s a tap on the nose which stuns them. It is then a matter of stepping on the chest cavity. No damage to hide and a skull to sell. Coons, skunks and opossum get the acetone treatment. I think maybe folks like the 22 because it is fast and less stuff to carry. Just my thoughts on the subject for what ever it's worth.

Anvil, You have some great ideas on how to put them down. As far as the 22, some state laws mandate that any trapped animal must be dispatched with a 22. Ok thats fine for the Fur Trade. But This is not Fur / Trapper Site. This forum is for taxidermist. Trappers can post anything that they want, or say anything about trapping but This site was created for the Taxidermist community. ;)

  8. Guns aren't made to kill either. They are a tool just like anything else. An inanimate object until placed in the hands of a human. Then it becomes the humans choice how that gun is to be used. I hope I put some clarity on that comment.

I can think of probably a hundred ways to kill something without a gun, you need be more specific!
But for trapping these are the methods I use.
1- Drownig sets on the river.
2- Kill traps such as conibears
3- acetone in the heart for skunks
4-When I used to keep Possums Break there neck by laying a stake behind the head and pulling there tail 25 cents apiece catching a thousand is not worth the effort to skin and flesh.
5-For fox I hit them in the end of the nose stunning them and use the heel of my foot stomping behind the front shoulder two licks dead as H#ll.
6- Coyotes I take out alive usually never kill.
    7- snares with cam locks.
8- there is that special occasion when I didn't bring my gun or ran out of ammo to where what ever I could use to hit them in the head worked, Hammer, rock, stick, etc. For skinning puposes this is not the best option.
9-and on a several occasions a coyote or cat has killed foxes I had caught.
10- When I put two dominate male coyotes in my cage and have had so many in my truck cage in one day that a few sufficated or got squashed before I got home.
These above are the ten that I pretty much use.
I guess you could inject air in there arteries or veins, choke using a catch pole, or if they dont chew out leave them till they starve not recommended but and option to kill something without a gun. ( To clear somethings up I have never and would never let anthing starve)

"leave them there to starve" has to be the dumb ass comment of they day. if i knew you did that to an animal id turn your ass in ,in a heartbeat, that is after i whooped your ass.

First off Brian I didnt say that I have ever let anything starve I am probably one of the most ethical people you will find when it comes to hunting or trapping. And, I wouldnt go around threatening to woop anything if you dont know who you are threatening. Sorry if there was any miss understanding. Just thought I would make that clear. And as far as turning me in, the Game and Fish know me very well, I have helped them on several Occasions and 4 of my very, very good friends happen to be Game and fish officers. Just wanting to get that straight.

I have heard alot of great ways and alot of very dumb ways. If you us a 22 it is fast and humane and if you are a taxidermist which is what this site is for and you can't fix a 22 size hole then you should start doing something else. Some of the things mentioned in here are just why some people hate hunters and trappers. If you are going to take the life of another animal at least give it the respect to make it quick and as painless as possible.

    Roadkill Jackalopes are Real !!!!!!!!!!!!

How about this, In Utah, if you catch a mountain lion in your set, which does happen, you have to release it from the trap wiht out harming it. Same wiht accidental catches of deer, martin, lynx, which there are non, wolverine, yeh right, and any other non target species. How would you remove a large mountain lion from a trap or a bear for that matter. We had a small bear get caught in a fox/coyote snare on my friends farm. We have removed them wihtout tranquilizers, but I want to see how you people would do it?

jake, first off it was not a threat and second im glad to see your an ethical hunter. but why even type that comment. i know people who are good friends with the man aswell and there some of the biggest poachers i know. so that dont mean squat. you say your a ethical person thats awesome and i apoligize if you took offense to my post but what i said i mean. it was a dumb ass coment and if i saw you do that i would turn you in after i kicked you in the ass. i dont want to start a arguement with you and im not threatening you niether. us trappers, hunters, fisherman and taxidermist need to stick together in this world.so im not looking for trouble i just felt that was a real dumb ass comment.later jake,Brian
