:) OK Guys & Gals I have another question about my Raccoon. Skinned the Raccoon Dorsal cut for my mount. Do I need to salt it or do I go ahead and degrease it? If I need to salt it I'm a little confused as how I salt and stretch it out with the dorsal cut.

I have tanned several hides in the past but this is my first time for a mount. Could you give me some suggestions??? The process I used for my other hides was salt it until its nearly dry, rinse it in Borax, Dawn, & water, then put it in the Alum / Salt pickle solution for about 2 weeks or until it it white, then soak it in Borax, Dawn & water.

I'm actually a little surprised the hides made it through a alum/pickle to Borax combination. A pickle is to prepare a hide for a tan, but Borax is NOT a tan. Borax is a dry preservative (usually referred to here as DP). If you're going to preserve and mount with Borax there is no ned to pickle, but you DO need to flesh ad degrease the hide really well. I would suggest fleshing and degreasing (soaking in dawn would work) thoroughly and then wrap it up and put it in the freezer until you're ready to actually mount the coon. Meanwhile, do a little research by searching the archives here on the forum on different tanning techniques and the use of DP for mounting small animals. There are also several good tutorials in the "tutorial" section. Once you've decided for sure how to proceed (tan vs DP) take it out, thaw it and continue with the mount. Good luck!

Thank You All for your replies :)! I have done research and read so much information that I guess I'm confusing myself ???. When I think I know which method I'm going with I start second guessing myself and start reading and doing more research only to find myself torn on the correct way again. I know that just like anything else, everyone has their own way and preference of taxidermy methods.

Choose your method and follow through. If you have second thoughts try a different method on the next mount, but don't try to combine the methods or change in mid-stream. DP or Krowtan, as mentioned above, would be a couple of good choices to begin with. Try different methods until you find what works best for you, just don't try them on the same mount. Good luck!
