mold in the ears

Discussion in 'Deer and Gameheads' started by Mossyback, Mar 4, 2009.

  1. I mounted the moose about 2 1/2 weeks ago and it's still not dry. all of the other heads (no other moose heads) that were mounted the same week are dry. I did notice that the ear butts were still slightly soft when i went to do my finish work and that is when i noticed the mold in the bottom of the ears. I also moved a patch of hair aside on the neck and found that the hide was also still not dry. this bull was taken in Nov so his hair is thick. I run a de-humidifier and a ceiling fan at nights but that still didn't seem to finsh drying him. I think i will have to put a fan on the mount to dry completely. What should i do about the mold in the bottom of the ears? I am not sure bacteriacide will work on fungas.

if it is green put some round up in there! No im just kidding you don't do that. I have no idea on the mold just thought it was funny.

  3. It happened to me once and I brushed acetone down inside which helped pull out the moisture and took out the mold then dabbed it with a rag. Then it dried up in about a week or so.

I had that happen too, white fuzzy mold in a damp ear. I just sprayed some alcohol in it and it went away.

Rich is right.Wipe it down with acetone. It will go away instantly and won't come back.It also dissipates some of the water.A fan directly on it will help a lot.

I've used lysol spray to clean the ears out.

  8. thanks for your help. So it will be acetone in the ears and a fan directly on the moose.

I agree, The fan works, I like to let the face set up first about 5 to 7 days, then put the fan on it just for the ears, as that is the last place it dries.
