use laquer thinner to smooth it for the same reason. it dries really fast and doesn't rehydrate the hide, which to me sounds like what is...
Have you tried air fluffing them in the dryer?
I mount a lot of deer with a 7 3/4” nose on a 7 1/2 and I don’t have any issues. A change out head would work great if you want the exact measurements
I always salt both sides of the ear. I found the hair stays better if you do.
