Just made my first batch of Krowtan , has what appears to be a dark oil sheen on top, is that normal?

    Yes, it looks fine

Krowtan acts like a pickle and will pull some natural fats out of the skin.
I think it may have some type of pickle oil in it also and all of these oils will come to the top and float
Keep the hide stirred often . Mold will grow and feed on this floating fat.

RoyalOaks, IF I had my choice (with over 35 years experience as a commercial tanner) I would have it in a wet drum or paddle vat running so many minutes an hour.
Any tan will be better by applying mechnical action.

Krowtann is very simple and easy to do just follow the directions.. If it says do not stir.. do not stir. Also I have never had Krowtann grow mold..NEVER.. And I do not stir, I follow the directions..

The info I gave bhymel will not hurt skins. The statement about mold is general. I answered the question about the oil floating on top and I stand behind that.

  10. I agree wholeheartedly with Royal Oaks...follow the directions and you will have NO PROBLEMS!!!!

George The older I get, the better I was.

Two people out of 12,000 who "follow directions". MY GOD, what's this world coming to.

Monte is correct, at least from the perspective of a real pickle and a real tan.
