It's not alum (I think)... it's not synthetic... what type is it?
Well... It is a type of Alum. Actually it's Aluminum Chloride. (normally Aluminum Sulfate is called Alum)
It's a tanning agent that the germans developed during WWII I think??? None the less, it's made and sold by BASF and is a good, easy to use tan. I would recommend it for any mount but would maybe look into a syntan for rugs. Only reason being that Lutan F can get washed out of the skin under the right conditions.
