Canvasbacks

They will be lifted by next year. The populations were recorded this year during a drought from what I hear. Shortly after the #s were taken and the regs were set by the feds...they got rain and there were Cans back at the breeding grounds. 3 woodies is something to look forward to though.

 

I don't think there is a guarantee that they will be allowed next year. It will depend on next year's counts.

 

sarahdj did i read you right you have a canvasback to gift i can only get mallards and canada geese where i live.Im just getting into birds and i wanna mount a couple more before i start doing this for others

 

Unless you're in one of the states with the "Hunter's choice" bag limit...we can still shoot canvasbacks in Texas, I think this is the final year of the Hunter's choice bag limit though....have to read up on it. Basically, we're allowed one canvasback, one hen mallard, one "dusky duck", or one pintail anytime during the season...but you can only choose one.

as of right now i don't have any. i can only hunt two fields and there still corn. and all i can really get is mallards if im lucky and canada geese. Im looking for something different to mount. so any one have any nice birds to gift keep me in mind. thanks

 

I thought that as the feds set regulations they generally stayed in effect for 3 years, but not sure how this one will play out. I was looking forward to shooting a canvasback this year. I've been told of a spot by past grad students where they would go to kill their can's, and they always got em. Guess I'll have to wait a while.

It's unlawful to sell or barter/trade federally regulated migratory birds. Just looking out for ya

 

fed regs seem to change year to year so i don't see a guarenteed 3 year ban on cans but it will depend on what screw ups they make next year in their counting. personally i would watch talking about gifting one bird in exchange for another when you do that it could be taken as you are bartering one bird for qnother and that is against state and federal regulations. good luck, markw.

 

Yeah, due to numbers, sage grouse season was closed in North Dakota this year for the first time in nearly 20 years. We are still allowed one canvasback with our possession limits though.

 

I saw a nice flock of can's a couple of mornings ago while duck hunting. First ones I've seen in a few years. Never was able to get close enough to bust one. I wouldn't get to gung ho about thinking can's will be open next season in some of the other flyways. Now that the CRP program has been tossed out, there will be a lot fewer nesting birds in coming years. I read that North Dakota has already lost 80,000 acres of CRP ground and that's only the start. By the way, you guys who are unfortunate enough to to be part of the Hunters Choice experiment, please let yer state wildlife agencies know that you don't support a reduced daily bag limit if the Fed's are allowing a liberal harvest package. Texas and a few other southern states are trying to force the rest of the states in the Central Flyway to go along with their recommendations on bag limits and species harvest. This is the last year of the experiment so its critical that you speak yer peace...

 

i took my son out to north dakota this year and we got alot of cans one was a nice drake we are getting mounted i just cant get a pose picked out any ideas ???

 

I saw one in the retention pond behind where I work hanging out with some mallards the last few days.

 

Triple BB, I'm not sure I understand what the problem is with the Hunter's Choice. Yes a couple of years ago we were allowed 6 ducks per day and now it's five. But now the season is open on all ducks at the same time instead of having different seasons for different ducks. This way you have a better oppurtunity to get what you are after. Before you might see a pintail but couldn't shoot it because pintail season was closed and was only allowed to shoot other species.
I'm not trying to be a smarta$$, I guess we are just seeing it differently or maybe I'm missing something (?).

 

Feds screwed up IMO there is way way way more cans coming down the sippi right now then last year when we could shoot two then. Had a fully plumed drake land in the decoys and fall asleep last monday. This diver hunter isn't very happy here in Iowa.
