formic acid pickle

Discussion in 'Tanning' started by whatthehellhunting, Dec 19, 2008.

  1. i just got some formic acid.i have never used it before i have always used oxilic acid before i am going to pickle and tan a red fox and I'm wondering what the formula for a pickle bath for a small fox would be i think that i would only need 4 gal of water but how much acid should i use

  2. I use 1 onze per gallon, check the PH, keep it at 2-2.5, it won't hurt to have it between 1-2, is what i heard, but don't let it get higher then 2.5. I usually add a couple onzes more for my deer capes the next day to keep it at 2-2.5, it does not change a lot after that. 10nce per gallon of Formic acid, and 2cups per gallon of salt. That's what i use, someone may have a different recipe. Good luck.
