Some time ago I posted a thread asking about the "real" jobs many taxidermists do. The response was excellent with occupations ranging from firefighter to lawyer, from nurse to social work, from banking to agricultural, from educator to warhousing. A full spectrum of occupations reflecting a common base - taxidermy.

Today I received a particularly poignant email regarding a long time friend who was injured while fighting for his country and who has been having a real hard time making ends meet. It got me to thinking, how many of us have served in the military and how many still are. As a veteran myself, I have a very soft spot in my heart for our military and would be interested to see how many of the taxidermy family are serving or have served. It would be great to post you service (Army Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard,) Your unit , your last station, and when you were in (or still in) Who knows you may hook up with someone you have wanted to see in a long time.

    Thanks for responding.

Craig, i to have a soft spot for military family members, i have the utmost respect for any and all who are serving or have served, its a special family to me, and i often find myself "daydreaming" of my time in. I planned to stay in and retire, but due to a family illness i opted out of my re'enlistment, i regret getting out, but things changed, and it is what it is, luckily my grandfather who was ill and given 9 months to live is still with us 13 years after the doctors gave him his "death sentence" so getting out wasnt the worst thing that could have happened to me. My next duty station was Camp Casey Korea on the DMZ if i had signed my reenlistment papers. So who knows where that would have taken me.

    Yep sure was
    1992-2000 USMC
MOS 5534 Marine Musician/ Clarinet  to SSGT
(Yes I was an enlisted Marine who earned my cross-rifles before switching MOS)

MOS 5511 United States Marine Corps Band/ Presidents Own/ Clarinet to CWO5
Most Marines serving in the President's Own are NOT true Marines.  They are professional musicians with Ph.d's in performance.  If you are ever around them in service charlies, look at their rank, they are not allowed cross-rifles.  Only true marines who completed boot camp can wear the rifles on their rank.  And no non-marine will ever take an officer rank.  Actually as of 2001 there will be no more officers as playing members of any band, and no CO will have any higher rank than CWO3 and most satellite bands  will have an officer in charge with the rank of Master Gunny.

    Stationed in
    Norfolk VA
    Quantico VA
    Okinawa Japan
    New Orleans LA
    San Diego CA

Here a photo of the Okinawa Band on the cargo hold of a ship in the East China Sea rehearsing for a performance in Qingdoa China.  We finally gave up trying to have any kind of rehearsals while on deck.. we couldn't keep our chairs and equipment from sliding all around as the ship rode the waves. Can you find me?

I had a feeling George was a Chief it explains alot.
The Chief in my squadron used to say you know why airmen's hair is cut like that? It makes it easier to step on their necks.

Obviously I heard all the jokes (What the best tool for cleaning oil off the belly of an airplane? An Airman) but I never felt that way. I always felt that if I took care of my people, they'd take care of me. I learned that if you DON'T take care of them, they'll surely take care of you as well.

Jon, I've always wondered. How do you write a performance report on someone whose specialty is blowing on a clarinet?

Well obviously if they suck instead of blow, it poses problems.. But they are judged the same way any other professional musician would be evaluated. Theory, ability, memorized works, marching ability.. and then ontop of all that the same things all other Marines were evaluated upon.

I wasn't always a Chief. And NO, I wasn't always fat and old either.
