If the solution is overwhelmingly carbonate, i.e. from sodium carbonate, the calcium from the calcium chloride will combine forming calcium carbonate. It is not very soluble so it will precipitate out of the solution.

The solution will turn cloudy or milky...

Your unknown + calcium chloride = cloudy = originally substance is sodium carbonate.

    A similar solution remains clear....

Your unknown + calcium chloride = clear = original substance could be your sodium formate...

If no change then it is sodium formate as calcium formate is far more soluble..

    "Ingredients:
    Deionized Water, Calcium Chloride. "

But now you're running into the "is it worth it?" factor...

    Now you're getting somewhere...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_carbonate

Notice we haven't guessed yet, we merely keep pushing the information gathered in the right direction...all the while eliminating others...

But, we are very close... ;)

Yea, well were getting bored waiting for the calcium chloride...Don't you all have a all night Petco?

The Flying Nun was a sitcom starring Sally Field back in the early 70's (ooh ouch! make that late 60's) if I remember correctly..She played a nun...that could fly, hence the name...

Probably not, I am in Cheyenne WY remember. But even if we did, I live 20 miles out of town and the weather is nasty right now. We are going in to town for church gym night tomorrow and I'll see if I can convince Dad to leave a little early and stop at petco. So it won't be till late tomorrow till I can try it, if they even have it. I wish I could do it now, but thats not feasible. So I guess we'll just have to practice patience. :)
