tanning a raccoon

    For a soft tanned skin do you skin flat, no feet, and tan or do you case skin with feet and tan.

    Which is the best if you are going to do it at home? Because my results aren't near that of a tannery but want to try it.

    John,the easiest attempt would be to tan it as a flat skin.Your going to have to degrease the skin though,this is a very important step with greasy critters.What I do is take all red meat off and salt ,salt for at least 24 hours,then I wash the skin very well,then I apply mineral spirits inside the flesh side rubbing it all over the flesh side.I let it sit inside the skin for about one hour.Than I wash the skin again,and then proceed with the tanning steps,i.e. pickling,fleshing, neutralizing and tan.:D
