Those were all repros and drilling out and fitting the eye took 25 min. Puttying it took 10 min. and painting another 10 min.

I'll tell you what is amazing is how little things can add hours on to each job. We do time studies here on each step to try to see where the hours ( and money) are going, and the little things can add up in a big way.

Didn't mean to call you out on that...it's just in my blood.

This topic just won't DIE will it??? LOL! Reminds me of a girl in college I dated for one NIGHT - lol!

Anyway, I can't see it taking more than 15-20 minutes to set that backside eye, but I don't paint my eyes. I guess it depends on each individual. Still, 15 minutes and another $5 bucks in supplies can be better spent on the SHOW SIDE. Too many taxidermists are hung up on THINKING that setting a backside eye and finishing that seam real pretty, etc. is a sign of quality on a wall mount. The truth of the matter is that many of them are lacking quality and realism on the SHOW SIDE of their fish. It's one thing if they've done a great job on the show side and doing that stuff on the backside is important to them. But, I'd say at least 50% of the taxidermists out there fall into the previous category...

Marty I would up that percentage a bit.

I'm AFRAID to ask where I fit in Gary - lol! Ahhhh, just chalk that up as a rhetorical question. I don't think I WANT to hear the reply - lol!

I wondered how long it would take for the egomaniacs to decide that if you use two eyes, you obviously do inferior work. And JUST THINK, 87% of us use TWO EYES. Man, with all that crappy work out there, it's a wonder any of us can make a living at all. I guess the 26% haven't been able to figure out that if they raised their prices appropriately, they could join the other EIGHTY SEVEN PERCENT and wouldn't have to bitch about how much money they "lost" installing the backside eye and giving a customer a reasonable facsimile of what they brought into the shop.

I wondered how long it would take for you to decide if someone installs one eye they must be an egomaniac. And just think, 26% use one, yet only one cantankerous old taxidermists out of the other 87% has such a personal issue with it. I suppose if that old fart would spend less time setting two eyes, and more time re-figuring his math, the would see that there are 113% of voters represented in his post. Anyone dumb enough to install a back-side eye probably cuts up cardboard to finish the backs of his deer mounts. ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hey Russ, scroll up to the top and see what it says now. You're almost as bad as Cole. He can't read either. He didn't bother to read the preceeding two posts or if he did, just chose to ignore what they said. Did you swap fiberglass chop for his jock itch powder at the WTC. This is the second time in as many days he's jumped at me without bothering to comprehend what he should have read. LOL

This one eyed $2,600.00 fish didn't get me any complaints but the client did give me about 30#'s of Halibut as a tip ;)

George, Just because I only use one eye doesn't make me egotistical. I'm simply another individual using taxidermy to replicate a fish. You can throw all the figures you want at me but there simply is no reason to cast judgment on someone just because they choose to do things different then you. I don't consider a person wrong just because they want to use two eyes. I say more power to them. Oh and at the time of your post the percentages were 77% and 23% you read the number of voters.

DUH. Sorry Russ. I was reading NUMBERS and not percentages. Had my head up and locked I guess. I stand corrected. There are 90 PEOPLE versus 26 PEOPLE now, NOT percentages.

Harum, no one is saying YOU are egotistical. The remark was hidden in the comments of two other individuals who implied that. I did notice, however, that you didn't show us that halibut with only one eye installed. Methinks you'd have a tough sell on convincing anyone you were "saving time and money" on that guy. LOL

George I do not think anyone wants to see that "halibut", well maybe before it was eaten.

George, the time and money it takes is part of the justification to NOT install a backside eye. But, the real reason is because that is what some of us have decided is unimportant to US when finishing a wall mount. Some go back with a Mac EZ Scaler and make the seam all pretty too. I just do a nice, clean seam finish with heavy duty paper towels and Elmer's Glue. IF I charged more money to cover the cost to install that backside eye, I STILL wouldn't do it! I'd take that time and tip 50 more scales instead. It's the principle. There's no reason to get too crazy finishing that backside on a wall mount. It's not meant to be seen. And I don't think my (or Gary's) statements have anything to do with Egos. I think it's a given that a good 50% of the fish work out there is CRAP - regardless of how many eyes one sets. That's not an egotistical statement at all. That is a fact. You know it too...

Give me more credit Georgie. You could have at least added up your percentages before planning your counter attack. ha ha I'm not jumping all over you, don't be so sensitive. My post was meant to be funny. (and it was...to me)

Egomaniac was defined as a person obsessed with their own importance.

George you shouldn't be pointing fingers here cause from my perspective you sure seem to fit that bill here ---trying to force your beliefs on all involved.

Most folks including myself simply stated what we do and why and could really care less what others do. Please stop looking for the "hidden" messages-- it isn't becoming of you.

One eye, two eye, does it really matter to anyone else but you and "your" customers.
