Ice around Driftwood

One more question. I've got a mount I'm doing that will be a duck on driftwood. The driftwood will be coming out of the iice. I intend for it to look like the wood is sticking up out of a pond that is iced over. That being said, I don't think I can do any kind of preformed ice. I read somewhere about pouring scenery resin then spreading clear silicone on it before doing another thin pour. Has anyone tried this?
