Jackalopes: pro or con?

Alot of the kids will spotlight a truckload of jackrabbits (perfectly legal here) and haul them to Rapid City and get $2 a piece. All destined to have horns in their second life and on to destinations unknown.

Sure glad someone else is slamming rugs, so I don't feel alone. It sure grates on me to take a nice big mtn. lion on turn it into a rug.

 

I tell them that they can buy them at Cabala's a lot cheaper than I'll do them for. I've done a couple, but not recently, and the price was WELL worth my time. The last one was $300 and it was at least 10 years ago. Yes, I'm a taxidermy whore, but I ain't a cheap one! I'd cry if I had to do a mountain lion rug, but bears are a different story!

I always wanted to figure out how to make a deer rump into a black jellybean dispenser. That would sell!

 

I like it, one pull of the tail lever releases some chocolate covered raisins.

 

or for those that have their own home bar, beer nuts.

 

I have mounted maybe twenty jack o lopes in 35 years here in Wyoming. I have never refused one I just charge alot for them $375. at present. I won't refuse novelties because some clients just do not care what it costs and on some big game animals like Bighorn Rams a lot of clients want to have a foot lamp and scrotum bag and back halfof the skin rug made along with the ram mount and refusing the novelty parts would mean loosing the entire business. I wholesale out rugs except I mount the heads.

Dang, I guess we are extremely cheap on are jackalopes. I like doing them. The more I can make it look real and get people going on them the better. They are not any harder the do a jackalope then a rabbit.
As for the deer butt. I love all those ideas. Someone out here does a warebutt. It is the white tail butt with teeth and eyes. A little creepy.

 

I wasn't aware that rabbits were easy...

Vikki, I doubt I'll be sending many. Most of my customers gave up toys long ago and if they suggest those things the get the "Yox Look" from me and change the subject. I've yet to see an "easy" rabbit. In the words of Bucky Flowers, my customers know they can "Have it Good - Fast - Cheap. PICK TWO"

 

George..what if they choose good & cheap? I think I would keep the choices to 2 only & cheap wouldnt be included.

 

LOL Bill. The 5-7 year lead time I give them pretty much eliminates that choice. At least no one's ever elected that one.

 

George I have to disagree with you, with a slogan like, "I will mount for money", taxidermy whore is more appropriate! The last one I quoted was $500. I didn't get the job, but I get more than that for a deer head and it would just take me away from deer heads, so why should I do cheaper. Besides when the last one hung here in the shop I had to explain it to everyone that came in! That was time away from my other work, too.

 

I must be getting old like you George. That's EXACTLY how I feel. It's like going to the funeral home and finding your family lying there with cat eyes and a coyote mouth. ;D

Totally agree, not only does the deer get shot and mounted.......he has to hold the rifle that killed him for eternity.

 

I own a business all about Jackalopes called Jackalopes are us and that is all I make are cotton lopes and Jackalopes and the rare plain jackrabbit and it is fun! I love it they are relatively easy and I make around a hundred dollar profit mine $150 and people buy them!

If your doing real research on "jackalopes" I have a real mounted cottontail rabbit with real freeze dried velvet antlers It is in storage now but I can get pics of it. Its a condition called shope papiloma that causes growths to form on the rabbits head.If your talking about the repo jackrabbits with deer antlers then those are fake..... except the does
