Tuning Steel-- how to

Discussion in 'Tanning' started by AndyO, Feb 1, 2007.

  1. This may seem elementary to the professionals but this is how I made my own tuning steels:

Bought tungsten rod from local welding supply company (tungsten rod is used in TIG welding) Buy a handle from Menards or cut the end off a broom handle and epoxy tungsten rod into handle. Cut the tungsten rod to length (personal preference) and shape a tip with grinding wheel. I'm not trying to take $$ away from the supply companies, just trying to help people out in a pinch.

Forgot to mention you can make four-six tuning steels for around $10.

  2. I posted some other tips in the fish section.

  3. I would round that sharp one to a bullet shape Andy. You can use an old wet stone and run a groove in it to round your end. Also, the broom handlw is not bad, but you can find red oak dowels in the custom wood section for your handles that are better suited to a finesse touch while tuning.
