I'm working on improving my buckskin tanning. I just tanned a couple buckskins. Portions of the skins are smooth, supple and soft, but other parts are papery and stiff. Is this more likely due to an incomplete tan, or to inefficient oiling and stretching? Thanks.

What method are you using to make your buckskin?

These were brain tanned with soap and oil. In the future I may just go with chemical tans. Is there a big difference in end-product?

    Re-brain, re-wring, re-soften.

Yes there is a difference, but you still have to break the skins..With braining you break before smoking with chemical tanning while drying..

Thanks. It's a lot of work.
