    Hey Guys.. the Euro Perch has this Y pattern in the 4Th bar split into the lat line it then makes a V to the top of the spines.
    Thats the only way I know of telling them apart.

    And it's absolutely illegal to have european perch in the U.S. although I know a prof that thinks someone may have them here doing research on them even though they are not supposed to.

    Peter, I believe you are right! I was not familiar with the European and decided to look further on the subject. I started with the barring patterns like Buck had mentioned. I wasn't totally sold on it as I found both species having the broken bar on the 4th sometimes (Although I must admit the European has this more often). What was the deciding factor for me was the black spot on the back of the front dorsal. Thanks Peter for heads up. I learned something today. Are there any other ways to tell the differences? From what I read today this was all I deciphered.

    I don't want to ruffle any feathers but I guess that never stopped me before. ;D

    Among taxonomists the biggest warning about classifying fish is NEVER EVER rely soley on coloration or outside markings. You have to take it farther than that as in gill rakers, scale counts, Pyloric caecae, spine counts, fin ray counts and ultimately DNA. etc. etc.

    Sorry but I can show you all kinds of variatons on the bar markings of perca flavescens from my ponds. and I wasn't aware Europe had rock bass and crappies.

    Honest I'm not trying to sound like a know it all. I guess I just can't help it with fish. They are my life.

    Sure hope this thread doesn't go the way of the silver paint. ;)

    Not trying to clip your wings, but your looking at the wrong photo. Check out the 2nd photo under my first post.

    Cecil and B-fish,

    It is true that that in some cases yellow and european perch are hard to tell apart, but these are the exeption. The large black spot on the spiny dorsal is something all e. perch have, but i see them rarely on y. perch. The caudal fin of the e. perch is always the same color as the pelvic fins (red or orange). I have also never seen the golden yellow I see on the bellies of most y. perch. I will try to make some reference pictures of european perch soon and post them, it may be useful for the European and Australian taxidermists.

    Anyone notice the bar pattern on the last perch is not solid black? I see so many perch that have solid black bar markings it makes me want to puke. If you must paint them back use steel wool to create the light areas like in the photo. I really adds some realism.
