Can dry 'auto tannery crystals' mix be used as a temporary dry preservative during the drying phase? Instead of 'just plain' salt. I have some tanner crystals and was wondering if I could use those instead of salt. It's just a situational thing and I don't intend to keep the skins 'preserved' with this, just wanted to know if it would work better then plain salt for the 'dry it rock hard' stage.

I don't know exactly what's in the mixture you have but just think about it...not only are you salting, but the tanning agents are doing their job as well. You'll end up with a dehydrated, partially tanned(although poorly) hide. I'm sure that salt is much cheaper than the tanning crystals.
