Antalope horn shrinkage

Discussion in 'Skulls and Skeletons' started by coyotekiller70, Jan 16, 2011.

  1. Am getting back to some antalope heads that i started in September, skulls are ready to have horns re-atached, but they have shrank around the base and are to small to go around core on the skull, my question is will soaking in water loosen horn enough and soften so they can strech over core or am I takeing a chance of horn falling apart after soaking in water, thank you guys for all of your help.

George The older I get, the better I was.

The apron has contracted. Get you a pot of boiling water. Instead of submerging them, hold just the bases (about 3 inches up the horn) in the water for about 5 minutes. Then quickly insert the case over the horn core and press down. Hold it there or if you predrilled a set hole prior to removing them, pin them down until the horn case cools. Then remove it, paint your epoxy up inside the case and over the core and slip them bqck down into position.
