Is It Too Late To Krowtan ?

I'm watching Rick Carters A to Z whitetail DVD. In it he uses krowtan. I never see him salt the cape. I have a cape salt dried hard and was wondering if it would be a candidate for krowtan after re-hydrating the cape.

  2. Why would you want to use Krowtann? Just because he used it in the video? It's not a problem however. Rehydrate and Krowtann it.

Just rehydrate and put it in the Krowtann...
You can salt dry or not prior to Krowtann and it doesnt make any difference...

Why Not use Krowtan? It makes an excelent mount.....
Re-hydrate it in a brine water and then go to the KT per instructions......If you want brush a coat of soft tan oil before you mount.......Good Luck

  6. Why rehydrate in brine? It will take forever. Rehydrate in plain old water. Just no a fan of KT.

So.........Let Me Guess............. You used it Once(or not at all)....... right?
Or.......You just decided to join the KT hate group for what ever reason? lol

Why does not being a fan of KT mean you haven't used it? Do you assume that anyone who uses it with an open mind will love it?

  9. Never used it. Had a few processed with KT through a friend and didn't care for it. Started tanning 8 years ago and had a fairly good process going with safety acid pickle, paratan, and knoblochs no 1. I just don't completely trust a pickled and oiled skin I guess. JMO.

If you used it once & didnt like it, WHY....would you use it again. Sounds like the definition of insanity.

Chances are that if you didnt like it then most likely.............they didnt do a good job..........
I ve very rarely came accross any true Taxidermist that didnt like a KT cape that was Processed properly.........

If you have an Open Mind and you are a Taxidermist then........... YES you should like it..........
I've mounted WT capes in all sorts of tanns and none are better.......... Put it in the hands of Newb and ..........well what do you expect.....

Maybe you just need to perfect the use of it...........just like any other system............
I have ......and it produces the most stretchy and mountable capes Ive ever done or had done..............
First time I used Liqua tan..........I didn't like it but I kept at it till I made it suit My needs...........
If you work skins then you will know what I mean..........if not then you wont.......
If you judge it from a single use then that's just being Close Minded.............

Well sorry, I tried it before I even knew there was any debate about it, so I had an open mind. A taxidermist friend recommended it, said it was the best stuff, so I got a bottle and tried it. And I like Formic and Lutan F better. You've got to remember that there is such a thing as personal preference. Not everyone is the same. What you love, and works for you, the next person might not like so well. Not saying there's anything wrong with the product, You just have to leave room for personal preference. I'm sure krowtann is great stuff, for You, and anyone else who likes it, I personally prefer Lutan F.

I agree with Mark its personal preference of what you like!! I started with krowtann but couldn't get the stretch I wanted.. It wasn't krowtann as much as it was the user of it
I wasn't shaveing my hide down far enough to get what i wanted and being new into this 7 years ago being self taught it sounded good and easy.. I used tanneries and tried several other tans as well.. Now that I know what I'm doing I still use krowtann today for most all my wet tann stuff that I'm doing.. Add a little krow oil and it streches even better...

This is just my thought's when I sent to a tannery I felt i had better strecth from a dry tanned hide than a wet one due to them breaking the hide lets it strech a little more..
Hope all work out for you!!!
