I mounted a deer up last weekend with an extra pair of eyes that I got for free and when I went to scrape the clay off, the paint peeled off of the eye. This is the fist pair I have seen painted on the outside like this. Is it best to rehydrate and get a new pair or just get a translucent brown and repaint the eye? The skin is almost completely dry. Thanks

  2. Get good pair of eyes and replace them.

Sounds like those "superb" plastic eyes bite the dust again. Tohickon sells quality GLASS eyes that don't scratch that easily.

I've never seen a set of eyes with the paint on the outside unless I put it there !!

I was going to use a set of van dykes like usual but misplaced one so I had no choice. These were given to me by archie phillips recently at a convention. I'm rehydrating now, thanks for the help.

You have to rehydrate them too? Wow, they must be really lifelike!

LOL D. That makes us even. I didn't see GLASS eyes mentioned either. I know that Black Forest Eyes might have been painted on top of glass, but the early "plastic" ones weren't actually "painted" as much as they were decalled and any sharp object or strong solvent would take the detailing right away.

These were glass eyes. The paint even came off of the back and stuck to the clay making it look like the deer had a catarac. Never using these again even in a pinch.
