  1. Hello
If a customer gifts me a couple of ducks or geese do I need a Federal taxidermy license to mount these? These will only be practice ducks and geese for myself to see if its something I would like to pursue in the future.I do have a state taxidermy license. Thanks

Yes, you do need a federal migratory permit...

I am in canada so I by no means have any clue how things are done in the states, But I talked to my local fish and wildlife officer and here we can do them for ourselves, can not do it for a customer, or cannot sell them, but for your own purposes (practice) you don't need permits. just commenting on the difference between here and there.

    good luck

According to the federal law you only need a permit provided your mounting waterfowl for someone other than yourself. I just googled and read the law, its just as i thought but better sure than in trouble.

    Predotorpro,

I just received my federal migratory permit yesterday and from what I understand you do not need it if they are gifted to you or you killed them. If you killed them you should have all hunting liecense/permits required. If they are gifted to you to be safe I would get a trasfer tag fill out from the giver.

The only way you don't need it is if you killed the ducks however if someone else killed the ducks and gave them to you then you have to have a federal migratory bird permit. Call local agent or someone on the federal side and they would happily help you out.
