    DeerSlayer,

First thing first I'm a beginner myself but I have a deer hide I used Krowtann on and made a rug out of it.
After krowtanning I stretched the hide on a sheet of plywood and used strips between hair and wood so air could get under it. Every day for first 4 days i moped on KrowOIL then every other day for week then skipped about 4 days put another coat Krowoil on it.
I broke it over a breaking board I made and it came out as soft as the hide I sent to tannery.
But yes breaking it was work not something I want do allot of....But it can be done with Krowoil and breaking.......

I'm no longer willing to remove from my hide the effort it would take to put into KT'ing a rug or throw. Not when you can send them off and have coffee and cookies instead.
    Been there, done that.
