Can I cut off the spurs on a rooster without having a bleeding problem? This bird is dangerous.

the dangerous part will be holding him down . Spurs have a solid bone core BUT don't try side cutters you could shatter the leg bone ,then ,,no rooster. Someone will have to hacksaw it off ,then make sure you do a clean cut or it may come in again crooked like a bad dehorning job. Personaly I'd just stay away from him or get rid of it. Lots of risks.Ever have a turkey flopping while the spur is in the palm of your hand??

Grab the spurs with a pair of pliers and quickly twist the sheaths off. He won't like it and it will probably bleed some, but it shouldn't do him any long-term harm.
They will grow back, so you might have to re-do it later.

I have had to remove several spurs from some of the roosters on my farm. cutting them will cause more trauma. You can twist and pull them off like mentioned above, the only other thing i do is i take flour and put on the spur site so it helps it clot, other wise they will bleed a lot.

  7. Watch the vid above- it explains about after care as well.

Since this guy sounds like a wild one, here are two ways you can calm him down. I would do this per spur twist since I bet the twist of one will pull him out of these-.
    Make him sleep: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1r9QWtlLOdc
    Hypnosis/tonic immobility: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgG10UMyzGg (one method)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QObyhINF2h4&feature=related (another method)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqZZ95L2n7o (yet another method- you can draw a line in dirt as well- anything to make them focus on movement)

  8. Just like dehorning a cow or goat, you need to cut them off as mentioned, but then using a red hot iron sear the the cut. Stops bleeding and they will not grow bad. Heat a flat piece of steel just larger than the size of the spur. Red hot and just more than a touch to sear the spur base.
