Local aquarium looking to get some shark skins tanned; anyone know who might do this?
Can't help you finding a tannery that does them, but make sure you know what the aquarium wants to use the skins for. The process differs depending on whether it is for mounting or for leather. Sharks have calcified pearls on their skins which you have to dissolve unless you want to make something like shagreen. Getting rid of these pearls typically involves the use of a mixture of strong acids, so be sure to find someone who has experience with sharks or ray. I think it makes a very interesting type of leather, one of my favorites. Good luck with your search.
