I'm asking if any of you have experience with a deer whose behavior is odd. A friend had a white tail doe show up in his front yard and vigorously attack his dogs with strikes and head butts. The dogs are herding breeds and tried to run the deer off, to no avail. My friend tried to run the deer off without success. After 3 days of this, the deer finally lay down on his lawn, head up. He fired a shot over her head, hoping the loud bang would scare her off. No reaction. As he walked straight up to her she looked at him and snorted but didn't bother to get up. He finally placed a single pistol shot in her head and killed her. We wondered how prevalent rabies is in deer, and if this type of behavior would have any other cause. There were no fawns around, and her bag was dry. Is it safe to handle the meat and hide? Many thanks for any insight into this.
