I think this is a juvenile red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)

Red tail!!! How do you get to keep hawks? In PA as far as I know a special permit is needed and must be for educational purpose!!

  12. Look at where he's from! We Canadians get to keep found raptors, just need to stop by DNR to get a permit. And I agree, juvenile Red-tail.

Check your computer screen, don't see any blue. I have red tailed hawks in my yard hunting finchesalmost every day and they look just like that, always have...most common hawk in Virginia.

What color are the eyes? Juvenile Red Tails have yellow eyes, mature have brown! It does look like a Red Tailed to me though.

    "Chicken Hawk"

The first picture shows the dark patagial mark under the leading edge of the right wing, next to the neck. The second picture shows a white tipped multi-banded tail. The above two identification marks along with the birds obvious size adds up to this bird being a juvie Red Tail in my opinion.
