Magnesium Carbonate

Discussion in 'Skulls and Skeletons' started by CDN.Back.To.Life, Jun 21, 2013.

  1. I am new to taxidermy and I purchased some Jonas Magnesium Carbonate a month ago. The box says to mix 3% peroxide with the powder to create a paste. The powder in my box is Grey. I researched Magnesium Carbonate on Wikipedia and the powder is supposed to be white. I tried to call Van Dykes where the powder was purchased but it is after hours.

    My question are as follows:
If I put this grey powder(paste) on my deer skull I am planning to European is my skull gonna turn grey vs. the white color that should actually be?
Did I get a bad batch or such?
And any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Your skull should not turn grey. Just different color of their stuff. You can use stronger than 3% also without hurting anything.

The mag carb is really only a carrier for the peroxide. It is basically inert. Instead of 3% I would use the hair salon 30 or 40 VOL. 40 VOL is 12%.
