Ammonia and water?

Discussion in 'Bird Taxidermy' started by Michael Brigman, Nov 4, 2013.

  1. I just watched a video on youtube of a guy soaking a duck in ammonia and water before he skins it. Just wondering why?
  2. Because he is crazy I guess

  3. When I took a seminar with a 3 time world champion he soaked his bird in dawn soap, water and 2oz of amonia to help with cleaning the feathers and the blood on them.. Everyone has their style I guess

The only time I've heard of soaking a bird in ammonia it was just the skinned-out head, and it was because a controlled soak in a soapy ammonia solution will help a shrunken beak to plump back up for casting purposes.
