Okay, so I have to apologize...apparently the blades I have aren't the ones I thought...while I can't give my source...my wife tells me these ones came from a local hospital connection, so maybe they aren't the cheap ones....well they were free so I guess I kinda win...;) my wife (who orders most of my crap for me) says I've never gotten blades off Ebay...i beg to differ but she says no.

LMAO Been there, done that. I ASSURE YOU, if they came from a hospital supply, they aren't like anything - including the Havels we buy. Havels sells us the "unsterilized" blades and though many use the stainless, the carbon blades are much sharper but dull quicker. I use the Havel's #10 non-steril carbon blades and they run me about $22 a box of 100 (I get them a bit cheaper as I usually buy two cases at a time and get a small discount). If you buy the Swann-Morton #10 surgical blades, they are about $6 for TEN.

Its funny how some worry about a few cents per deer. When I order direct from Havels with shipping each box is $15. I use the #22 nonsteril carbon steel. Thats 15 cents per blade. I use 4 per deer. One to cape, 2 to flesh the face, and one during prep and mounting. Thats a whole $.60 per deer. Say you do 100 deer/game heads a year. Thats only $60 and hey you never have to sharpen a knife, saves you time because a sharp blade works faster and time is money, don't put as many holes in capes because a sharp blade has more control and uses less force, and probably saves you money in the long run or only costs you a little more than cheap blades that dull quickly and use more per deer. Good blades are hard to beat all you need to do it flick the wrist lightly with very little pressure and the correct angle. Once I feel the blade starting to dull and taking more pressure to cut it I switch out or I reach my switch point I change. When I get a new deer to cape I don't care if my blade is still pretty sharp it gets tossed. I plan for 4 blades per deer and thats what I use. After caping I put a new one on even if its pretty sharp still and start turning the face because I know by the time I get done with the face and forehead, the blade will be at 80% for doing the lips and after that its starting to lose what I like. Then a new one for the nose as I want a fresh sharp for the nose turning and is down to 80% sharpness by the time I do the eyes and eyelid glands and finish the blade with the earbutts and toss.

Okay the blades I have are cinncinati surgical and swann Morton?? I can cape up to four deer with the blades but that is pushing it....when I get into final fleshing and prepping one blade lasts a while. Add long as i'm not hitting bone they take a while to dull obviously. I use 22s but that's prob just because my wife got them for free...lol!!!

Swann-Morton are exceptional blades. They seem to be a bit more sturdy than even Havel's. It's gonna break your heart when you go back to those cheap ones.

The irony! It ends up Josh is using the best blades made, LOL.

  8. I use Havel #22's for most everything. I also have Bard-Parker #10's for the small delicate stuff. The Bard-Parkers are about a buck a blade but they are NICE!

  12. Thanks for all the discussion guys. I bought some a couple years back from "Surgical_blades" on taxi.net. They weren't that bad.. I'm not skinning every day and they did what I needed.

I do have some #60's that are about $1 each and they are awesome, I assist with autopsy's occasionally and that's what we use.
