Was afraid of this happening

    I got a little behind from last season and am 4 weeks out on my last 12 shoulder mounts. I also took in what I deem was my limit for this season. I have a mount I am working on for a repeat customer and he called me tonight and asked if he could bring another one by he got the other day. I told him politely that rather than disappoint anyone else with running over a year I am not taking in anymore work for the season. He told me he would wait over a year and I told him call me in a month and see. Well he got all upset, basically hung up and then called back asking if he can come get his antlers and cape from last year! I was so PO'd at this guy but I told him certainly but you owe 65 for fleshing and tanning 25 for caping it and 65 for the form. Which meant he was going to lose his deposit. It ended up staying.

    In my opinion, I think it's bad business to turn down a job from an existing and returning customer. As long as you explained the the time table and he understood and signed off on it, I wouldn't want to send a good customer to another taxidermist unless I just didn't like the guy.

    I agree with the other guy. but if you want after you hit your magic number just raise your price another 100-300 more for any extra heads, this will likely turn a few away without telling them no, as long as you tell them how long up front. not to mention you will make more money for doing them a favor.

    I would have explained the time frame to him and let him decide. If you get backed up for next year fine as lonig as they know what to expect and agree to it. Then raise your prices next season to lower the work load to what you want and again if you run over continue doing the same routine. Its better to be busy than slow.

    I would not of turned away a repeat customer as they, for me anyway, are my bread and butter.

    I take 1-3 items a year to my taxidermist. If he ever turned down a mount from me, I would find a new taxidermist.....

    If he knows what to expect. Why turn him down?

    Really don't understand why you insisted on not taking it if he told you he understood the situation and you gave him all the facts. Repeats in any business are your bread and butter and you can't buy any better advertisement. I'd call him back, tell him bring it over. Just my two cents.

    I usually max out in my studio every year and have run into this dilemma before many times. If it is a good repeat customer, I would likely just take it in making sure to give him full disclosure. Bad EHD in my area last year though will likely negate that possible problem for me this year though. Now I wish I would I wouldn't have turned away those jobs last year. :mad:

    I would not turn him down or any customer for that matter reguarding big game. Some other items as fish or birds, sub them out if there's too much. You never know what the next season will bring in this business. I tell customers now, its a year turnaround give or take a month or two, mostly all say no problem.

    I hate to say it, but doing what you did might just get you a lot less work in the future. Plus, when he got off the phone, he called 10 of his buddies to tell them, and then they called their buddies. He said he would have waited longer, and that is a sign of a good client. Personally, I would never turn away one of my good clients, it doesn't take too many of them to pay the bills just saying.

    I agree with all the comments above which basically say you should call him back and apologize, then raise your prices on future mounts to see that this doesn't happen again.

    I agree with the others, Since he was repeat, I would have taken the deer.

    Oh Gawd NO! Never turn down return work. That is a sin, they dont care if you are behind a bit, they want your service!

    WOW!!!! Really bad move hedhunter what the heck was you thinking. Enjoy the heads now cause you probably are going to get a lot less in yrs to come. Doesn't make since

    This is why I preach the principles of business. This was a terrible terrible business decision. I am afraid the bus has left the station on getting him back also. Your first reaction is usually what is in your heart and crawling back will only make you look pathetic.

    Lesson learned.

    This is not my full time job and want to persue a promotion and more hours at my 9 to 5. I physically can't do 50+ heads a year anymore and I ALSO have a lawn cutting service and cut 25 a week in the summer. I don't depend on this money. I actually turned away three more since this post. Two were repeats. I sent them to two other taxidermists I trust and believe to be the best in the area (who I used 14 years ago before I did it myself) I already cut out birds and fur bearers this year.
