Can a re-hydrated dry tanned cape be dried again?

Discussion in 'Tanning' started by Rackmastr, Dec 10, 2013.

  1. Hey Guys,

This is a basic question I understand that has some variables, but I am just thinking outloud a bit. I need to contact my tannery in the next day or two, but generally speaking, can a dry tanned elk cape that's been re-hydrated be dried out again?

I have a dry tanned elk cape that I hydrated and took measurements, and froze. The client changed his mind and is unsure what he'd like to do with the cape, so I'd like to get it out of my freezer and back to him to free up some space. Ideally, I'd love to be able to dry it out again and give it to him so neither of us have to worry about freezer space.

Whats the general thoughts on this, before I speak to my tannery?
  2. I don't do it all the time........but I have done it. You will have to work the leather when dry again or during the drying process to have it remain soft.
