What magazine is better??

Breakthrough, hands down in my opinion.

 

I recommend both.

 

Taxidermy Today is almost entirely how to articles and product review. Breakthrough is how to articles and taxidermy industry in general. Breakthrough seams to be the more classy one, but honestly, I couldn't pick one over the other so why even consider a choice. It doesn't cost much to get both and then you won't have to think about which one is better.

 

Concepts like night and day. If you want the industry projected as artistry along with a plethora of subjects and information, Breakthrough can't be touched. If you want to see name-brand products and how to use them, Taxidermy Today is your choice.

 

Breakthrough is getting too much wood carving articles for my taste.

kb, if you ever go to the World Show, you might want to check out the World Wood Carving Championships hosted by ......BREAKTHROUGH ! You see, we aren't the only game in town and Mr. and Mrs. Lindquist are a bit diverse in their professional endeavors.

 

I'd recommend getting both if starting out, information overload is what you need right now. Especially if walking to the mailbox is all you have to do to get the best of the industry's tips and knowledge.

 

When I first got Breakthrough I thought it was odd that wood carving would be covered. I started reading the articles and found that I really enjoyed reading them and I also found that there are a lot of tips and technics that can translate over to taxidermy. As far as reading enjoyment goes, Breakthrough wins out for me. However, I get both and have learned a lot from both.

 

George am I not allowed to have an opinion? How would I not know they are involved in wood carving...It's featured a lot in their magazine...I buy Breakthrough for the taxidermy. Maybe a new Breakthrough Wood Carver's Digest would be in order.

 

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but not to their own facts. I'd challenge you to prove that "wood carving" takes up enough space in the magazine to even be mentioned. As a person who writes for money, I can tell you that many MANY times, there's just nothing worthwhile to talk about. Just how interesting is "one more deer mount" going to make a magazine? Truth be told, many of the "how to" articles there are simply a "Wow factor" and most of us aren't predisposed with the time nor talent involved to pull it off. If I EVER mounted a duck that looked as clean and pristine as the ones I see in Breakthrough, I'd charge $1000 for it as I know it would take me a year to complete. That's why I subscribe to it. I like to see what's possible. I stopped getting Taxidermy Today because it was a trade magazine with a very limited scope of what could be done with products they were getting paid to advertise. Breakthrough is an artist's magazine and I can bet everything I own, given the choices of having your mount show up on the front cover, the pinnacle of achievement is Breakthrough. You'll note that many of those mounts that appear there use creative wood as part of their background. That means many taxidermists are wood carvers and sculptors whose enjoyment covers a broader spectrum than just stuffin critters.

 

Since there is only two major taxidermy publications printed, get both as I do. Besides state shows, next best money spent. One deer form cost more then a year subscription, so whats the problem.

 

Interesting thread, because the reason I get the Breakthrough Magazine is because of the "Wood Carving" articles. Actually, I get it because of the "Fish Carving" articles. I have participated in the World Fish Carving Championship a number of years and do so because of the articles in Breakthrough. The articles are not wood carving, but they are fish carving........... You might see an occasional article on habitat but then fish carvers and taxidermists all can use that info. So please bear with us fish carvers for the few pages of fish carving info we receive each issue.

George I think wood carving is a wonderful attractive art...but when you justify it being in Breakthrough Mag. because "sometimes there's just nothing interesting to talk about" so throw some wood chips in there because a lot of taxidermist like to carve wood. You know what... a lot of taxidermist don't carve wood but I bet alot like to tinker on old cars, so why not throw in an article on "How To change the Jets on a Holley Carb". I just said I read Breakthrough for the taxidermy and if you get off sanding on balsa wood...knock your lights out.

 

Uhhhh, because working on cars requires little talent but more industriousness??????

Ive worked on cars and carburetors for 50 years and on jets for 30 - so DON'T go there. I sure seems you have a burr in your saddle for FISH CARVERS. I'd suggest you not renew if it's worth all the complaining you've done. But next time you pick up your foam deer form, remember some of the very first forms were CARVED FROM WOOD.

 

No sir your not gonna get me to cancel my Breakthrough that easy...I here there's a couple of feature articles on CHAIN SAW artist carving "Yogi Bear" and a "Pelican" coming in the future...I'm not going to mis s that!

It does not say devoted to taxidermists.

I for one like Breakthrough WAY better that Taxidermy Today. A couple of years ago I subscribed to Taxidermy Today after a long break ............. and was glad when that subscription was up.

Wood carving is considered wildlife artistry.

I would recommend trying both of them and then make the decision on your own.

I am only a hobbyist and I subscribe to both. Rarely is there is an issue that goes by that I don't find at least one helpful hint or idea from each one (often times it is more than one). If I HAD to choose there is no doubt I would select the Breakthrough. But since I don't have to I will just continue as I have for years with both. Actually I wish that Taxidermy Review was still out there. I would re-subscribe to that in a flash! How about it Joe? Any chance of reviving your publication?!!!
