I've been getting severe pain in my first and second fingers on my right hand. It's not like I'm not used to pain because of all my surgeries but this is really aggravating. It's waking me up at night now. I can bend my fingers fine and grip ok. I would imagine there's a lot of you out there that have the same problem from sewing. Any remedies.

I get that problem, only in my wrists because I've torn too much soft tissue from years of karate. I have two things that help a lot. First I take 800 mg. of ibuprofen. The second thing is I hired a skinner to do a lot of the tedious work. I think the second thing helps more than the first. It does cost me $50 a deer and $100 a lifesize, but it's well worth it for me.

Get checked by a good hand specialist. Sounds like it could be carpal tunnel syndrome. Can be fixed with minimally invasive surgery and a few weeks of recovery.

  4. Don't be to quick to agree to surgery. I know several people that had it done. A few have been good for years now but a couple has had to have it re-done every couple years because they're prone to scar tissue building up. I've had numbness and tingling in my hands that radiates to the elbow and wakes me at night fo years. I have to wear a wrist brace at nights when I'm real busy in the shop. Dr's have told me carpal tunnel may be part of the problem but most of mine comes from my neck and upper back being out of place a lot (from heavy lifting, pulling, etc.). And all the nerves to your hands and arms come from your cervical vertebrae. So before you'd have surgery see a chiropractor. Mine does wonders for my issues.

I also have to wear a wrist brace when I'm busy. That's part of why I had to hire someone, but in my case it wasn't carpal tunnel. I thought that was more in the wrist/hand, not the fingers. You could also try some NSAIDS.

I had carpel tunnel on both hands years ago. That lead to trigger finger surgery on both hands. This isn't numbness but shooting pain. Having been a truck and equipment mechanic for close to 30 years has lead to lots of orthopedic problems.

Maybe gout? I get it in my toes, but once in a while it hits the knuckles in my fingers.

When I first started getting rheumatoid arthritis the pain was in my first and second fingers on my right hand. Then after awhile two knots appeared on each side of the fingernail. Sometimes glucosamine chewables help, and sometimes they don't. Now, my fingers are twice the size of the ones on my left hand. I'm not real sure if this could be what your dealing with, just a guess. If you use a pencil or pen often it can really be a nuisance when you can't hold it between your fingers. Hope you can find out exactly why you're having the pain.

  9. Could be tendonitis. I was diagnosed around 2006 or so with it and have lived with it ever since. I have it in my wrists and hands. I maintain them by stretching them, taking vitamins, and not over pushing them past the pain limits. Don't go with surgery- do your research and try techniques out until you find the right regime for yourself.

I have extreme pain in the joints of my hands, feet, neck and knee's. The doctors can't find a direct cause after umpteen tests. They say that it is likely the aftermath of untreated lyme disease. Who knows? I've had lyme disease 4 times and went over a year before treatment the first time. Anyway, My joints some times feel like they are being manually dislocated.Their solution is Alieve in the morning, ibuprofen at lunch and Tylenol in the evening. It takes the edge off and luckily, it comes and goes. Sometimes a month or so in between "attacks" that last for months. In fact it's gotten to the point that what used to take me 7 hrs to do is now 15hrs or more. 5 minutes with an air brush can = hours of intense pain. Sewing used to be about 20 min for a full cut seam on a deer. Now it is hours, literally. My solution has come down to this. I pulled my ad in the paper and I'm not taking in any new customers and only doing work for repeat customers and only doing 20 pieces in a year.. I took in well over 100 pieces this year, due to my wife becoming disabled and losing her very good income, I felt that saying no to taking in work was not an option when I can make up some of her income with taxidermy, but it's not worth being in pain all the time doing taxidermy when I can minimize the pain by not aggravating it. I hope you find a solution so you can keep doing what you enjoy doing.

DL, well you've got diagnoses from RA to Carpel Tunnel and I think I even saw a "maybe you're pregnant" in there too. I understand it's quicker to get in on Taxi.net, but go see a dang doctor! And if he/she doesn't have any answers that help, see another til you do get some results.

Take some pills and I hope you feel better int he meantime!

Michael that's interesting. A lot if us that have worked standing on concrete for 40+ years have a lot of foot issues. I know athletes go to have pedicures to avoid foot problems. Kind of a slippery slope.

  16. I got dequervain's syndrome from sewing a lot. It's similar to carpel tunnel but in the thumb. It gave me agony and I couldn't grip anything, but had to have an op and it's better now. Not 100%, and I probably need another op soon but at least I can work a few hours pain free!
