I'm very new to taxidermy, so I apologize if I don't know the correct terms.

I bought a wolf tail from Ebay a few weeks ago, from Alaska. The seller stated the the tail was tanned a few weeks prior.

Checking out the actual leather on the inside, it appears to be very oily, has a very strong smell, and seems to be flaking off. I'm very disappointed, as I spent a decent amount of money on it. I'll do anything to try to salvage it, but I'm not sure if I can.

  2. Sure it's not a coyote tail?

At any rate, you can try shaking it around in a tied-off garbage bag full of air and a few handfuls of hardwood sawdust, if it is tanning oil in the skin. Is it a chemical smell, or some sort of nasty "natural oils" smell?
