Zebra Hide

Discussion in 'Tanning' started by tmpatton22, Aug 22, 2014.

  1. I see a lot of posts on here about sending African animal hides out to a tannery because they are difficult to deal with. So I guess I have an unusual situation, I have a Zebra hide that is a fresh hide I took it off the skull and fleshed it myself. Since the hide is fresh can I follow the normal steps to tan a mammal ie Salt, pickle, tanning oil or is there more to an African hide?

    any suggestions will be helpful

  2. There is a lot more to a zebra hide. It has a thin tough membrane that has to be removed while shaving. You have to know exactly what you are doing or it will look like swiss cheese from cutting holes. Send it off.
