Is it necessary to split the tail of a red fox that's being wet tanned? Or can I just mount it up.
If you are sending it off. splitting is the way to go. If you are tanning it yourself you can carefully run a stiff wire all the way out to the tip and make a small cut to let the wire exit. Next work salt all the way through using the wire. Fat and grease can be cleaned out using dawn and a paint gun cleaning brush or a gun cleaning brush. Pressure pickling solution all the way through several times during the pickle process with a large syringe.
i don't like to take chances i would split it until you get more experience under your belt
Split else run the chance of slippage.
