My son found 2 decent 10pts in my pond last week. They stunk then. You can just imagine what they smell like now. They found them attached together. Don't know how long they were in there. They cut the heads off. I want to keep them. But don't know what to do. Thought about just hanging them in a tree and let nature take its course. But I don't want them to bleach or have the squirrels to eat them. The only taxidermist we called didn't want to mess with them. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  2. Continue macerating them in warm water; They shouldn't take too long to completely rot out. Or just check in your area, I am sure there is more that just that on taxidermist

I second macerating. Make yourself a maceration tank out of whatever bucket/tub/cooler/etc. you can find that will fit them, get an aquarium heater to keep the water warm, and wait. I bet it will go quick given that they've been rotting already. Make sure you pour your water out onto a screen to catch any teeth that come loose during the process. You can do some searching on here for info on further degreasing and whitening of the skulls once the flesh is rotted off.

My sympathies for your nose. ;)

    That's an awesome mount.

  6. You better not discard the lower jaws - complete locked skulls are more valuable than euro-mounted.

Very nicely done mount there Dennis. ... Go with maceration as well. Find something they will fit into that isn't metal. Fill it with water and keep the water warmed to around 80 to 90 degrees. Within a week, less than two, the skulls will be cleaned. It will help if you can hold your nose and trim off most of the larger chunks of flesh from them. If you just leave them outside they will get damaged or something will run off with them.

Sadly, the antlers have now been separated and cut off from the skull. A shame. Would have made an awesome addition to someones collection.

That's too bad, people will pay out the wazoo for locked bucks. I think the last pair I saw on eBay went for around $600 and they were still covered in mummified hide.

Apparently, the OP wasn't the finder. To bad the ones that did find it didn't wait or at least keep the heads together. Couple more picks below showing how they were found. Apparently, they yanked them apart right away. Chopping the antlers off came later.

Just let him know if they were locked face to face he just threw away $1,000.00 by cutting then apart..

  15. These are a few pics of a couple still locked bucks that I'm currently working on for a customer. He found these 2 brutes still "locked" just the way they are on a piece of property he hunts on. He wants a wall plaque done with them "still locked". Going to be a fun project as I've never had something like this come in before. Geez, wonder what these would be worth on eBay? lol

I would like to get a set of locked antlers for my own collection. Complete skulls like the above. Not this time though. :(
