Happy New Year bird mounting enthusiasts! Well I've been contemplating this type of thread for 3 years now!....and I told myself that 2015 would finally be the year that we try it out here on the bird forums :)

It's a very straightforward concept in that you post a "before" picture of any taxidermy project that you are working on. It might be a body that you are going to alter, a head to be painted, a habitat base to be built, an eye to be painted or a problem that you are going to solve - but no matter what project it is it will be demonstrated through a "before" pic and then an "after" pic where the result of your efforts is revealed. As a bonus we could have a "during" picture as well when necessary to explain or make things more clear.

I'm betting that this thread will not only be entertaining, but educational as well. And everybody likes a "reveal" picture as they are just plain satisfying and thought provoking to look at. :)

I'll start us off - feel free to jump in. Thanks - Matt

  6. This looks like it could be interesting. Hopefully it'll take off. For me personally....I'd like to see what people are putting inside of their birds. What the altered forms look like, neck shapes for different poses, how wings/legs are wired, and even prepped heads (dremeled, painted, etc). Anything that's done prior to mounting the bird to see what the "guts" will look like and then the finished mount. Many of us newbie/hobbyist struggle with anatomy and it would be tremendous help to see what's being done underneath the feathers. I like having those "oh I see how you got it to look that way" moments.

I have a question KMA. Can one post also a picture of a damaged mount before and after repair, or is it to building new mounts only? I get some restorating birds sometimes. ;)

This would be GREAT!!! Thanks for the suggestion Justin!

Being a newbie also, I spent HOURS a couple of weeks ago going through the "What's on Your Workbench" thread looking for just such things. I found a handful of pictures that I saved of different wing positions on manikins, neck positions, how the crop area was built up/wrapped, and leg positions on manikins and then the completed mount. This was great because I could see what was underneath to accomplish the finished position.

I would love to see the different ways people use and place caulk/wallpaper adhesive (injection needle), excelsior, cotton batting etc. for side pockets, legs, and neck/shoulder junction.
