   How many iterations of application of softening oil does everyybody use? Is it worth putting on multiple times to get a softer leather or just continue to work/break the hide for a greater amount of time?

   For any areas I oil, I see no need to oil multiple times, as the hide can only accept what it can accept.
   
   Also, before mounting, ensure you wipe any excess oil off the skin or you may have some adhesion issues with hide paste.

   depending o how thick a hide is can determine this. I generally do bear rugs two to three times.
